Clinical Dental Technician in Shrewsbury

Here at Winchester House Dental Practice in Shrewsbury, we are proud to have a host of experts working within our team – including a denture specialist.

This time, we want to introduce you to our Clinical Dental Technician (CDT), Ian Taylor.

What is a Clinical Dental Technician?

CDTs are registered Dental Care Professionals, who are trained and qualified to provide a range of denture services direct to patients – services that were previously only available through your dentist.

With many years’ experience working as Dental Technicians, CDTs have the advanced technical and clinical skills needed to carefully design and hand-craft every denture to the individual requirements of the patient.

You will find CDTs working as part of a multi-disciplinary team within dental practices, such as Winchester House, or operating from their own independent denture clinic.

Working with tooth loss

CDTs have to undergo rigorous training and evaluation. Patients who have experienced total tooth loss can be treated by a CDT directly who will make and fit their complete dentures.

However, if you need partial dentures or you have dental implants or some of your own natural teeth remaining, you should first be seen by a Dentist before a CDT can begin your treatment.

Ian, our CDT, will advise you at your initial consultation.

Treatments available

Ian can describe the different types of dentures available and the technical procedures involved, so you can make an informed choice about the treatment options.

Together, you and Ian can then decide upon the right solution for you. In order to create a detailed treatment plan that is tailored to your needs, Ian will undertake a detailed clinical evaluation and may refer you to a Dentist or Implant Dentist.

Ian may undertake one or all of the following:

• Investigate your dental and medical history in full
• Take x-rays and photographic images of your mouth
• Distinguish between normal and abnormal effects of aging, especially relating to tooth loss
• Make referrals to other dental professionals where necessary
• Advise you on how to take care of your dentures and achieve optimum oral health

Ian’s professional journey

Ian has a combination of training with the Royal College of Surgeons, a dental hospital background and 40+ years’ experience working at the highest standards.

This experience enables him to perform a full range of services relating to dental health care and wellbeing.

Ian qualified in 1979 from Matthew Boulton Technical College with a City & Guild Certificate in Dental Technology.

He also worked as a denture technician apprentice at Birmingham Dental Hospital.

Special interest

In recent years, Ian pursued a special interest in the skills and knowledge necessary to provide a high quality removable dental appliance service directly to the local community.

This interest lies in providing dentures and dental care that quickly restores oral health, improves digestion, restores speech and rebuilds confidence.

Ian has since qualified at the Royal College of Surgeons with a Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology.

In his spare time, Ian enjoys travel, golf, tennis, skiing, arts and crafts and family life.
