What are the benefits of seeing a hygienist?
Most dental disease is preventable with the advice and guidance from a professional dental hygienist.
Dental hygiene is one of the many services we provide here in Shrewsbury, which helps keep your mouth, teeth and gums in great condition. Prevention of dental disease is practiced by all our dental team, but the role of the dental hygienist is integral to this.
What is a dental hygienist?
Hygienists are trained professionals, who can remove deposits from your teeth, including plaque, hard tartar build up and staining. They also polish your teeth to give you that lovely smooth feeling. These skills not only keep your mouth clean, they can prevent gum disease, tooth decay and keep your breath fresh.
Dental hygienists are trained to educate as well as treat patients, so they will offer oral hygiene and dietary advice if required to help maintain your cleaning routine at home.
What services do they provide?
•Toothbrush instruction
•Dietary advice
•Recommend suitable interdental cleansing methods
•Apply fluoride gels and pastes as needed
•Apply sealants to teeth when required
•Gum treatments in the form of simple cleanings as well as more complex cleanings.

Here at Winchester House Dental Practice, patients can be seen and treated by hygienists without the need to see a dentist first.
If you haven’t seen a dentist for a while, we would recommend you see one for a full clinical examination. But you can keep on top of your dental health by visiting the hygienist separately.
Our friendly hygienists can treat all forms of gum disease and, if necessary, refer you to an appropriate dental colleague should your gum condition require treatment that is outside their scope of practice.
If you are considering switching to Winchester House, it’s a super smooth process, and we can work to your current dentist’s prescription if they are happy to provide one.
